This is a map, painted with gouache on chipboard, of the children's garden at Atlanta Botanical Garden. The idea was to imagine what happens in the garden at night, when all of the people have gone home, and everything comes to life. I tried to make it sweet and just a little bit sinister at the same time.
You can see more details after the jump.
Preliminary Drawing
You can see the first sketches I made of the little squirrel character here, and some of the illustrated maps that inspired me here.
Also, here is a very interesting post on the Uppercase blog about cartographic vandalism.

Lovely. I've never been to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, which is a little odd since I'm only a couple hours away. I hear it's quite beautiful...
ReplyDeleteThis really is lovely, so many great details! Always neat to see the sketch, too. Your little bear and bunny must be having the best time!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteAnd Jamie, you should try to go to the garden sometime. It really is nice!
Its funny, despite all that activity going on, which is really cute, by the way, I'm really drawn to the wonderfully swaying trees! They appear to be moving!
ReplyDeleteThat's very stylish and interesting map.
ReplyDeleteCollegue, it would be interesting to know your impression about our illustrated maps.
Thank you.
